I live by the Iowa Interstate Peoria subdivision and at the crossing on my street they have a RACO mechanical bell. Sadly they have been replacing the crossings.

Union Pacific's been especially bad for this in recent years. Even signals as new as less a decade or two old get replaced entirely by Siemens junk that won't last half as long. It's a horrendous waste of money and equipment.

That's sad the crossings look like there in fine condition. in the years to come sadly its going to be very rare to see a crossing with a mechanical bell or incandescent lights or cantilevers. It's sad that they replaced them

Nice one, Porter. 3:09 After you filmed on Caplin Street crossing, the near signal was replaced with an even brand new signal after a derecho storm occurred in May.

Good video and crossing! Shame the original mechanical bells were replaced a while back. Love how it still retains the old ATSF signals, albeit modernized.

The second one looks like a CSX style crossing. Just mount the NEG E bell on the lights and it’ll be one.

Great video! Nice 70s Safetran cantilever install.

That particular gate is a power up gravity down mech. These gates have what's like a dynamic brake to a locomotive. When the gate lowers the dynamic braking slows the speed at which the gate drops. When this mechanism fails the gate drops at an uncontrolled speed. The counterweights are fine as once there set the only time they need adjusting is if the type of gate arm is changed or lengthened.
